Since September, Alma Mater Studio has been offering STEM classes for children ages 5–10. During the first lessons, our young scientists dove into the world of discovery and experimentation, learning the key aspects of real laboratory work:
they learned about lab safety rules and proper behavior in the lab.– Practiced using pipettes, funnels, measuring cups, and microscopes.– Tried recording observations in tables, discussing results, and drawing conclusions.
We discovered that you can inflate a balloon using science and learned what a chemical reaction is — taking the first steps toward understanding that chemistry is not magic but a science with rules and patterns.
We also explored plant juices and found out that some of them can act as natural pH indicators, changing color in acids and bases — just like real litmus paper! It became a perfect opportunity to talk about how scientists record observations to analyze and make conclusions.
We even turned into inventors — creating leaf-collecting devices from ordinary paper cups. Children discovered that engineers often use simple materials to design useful tools, and they tested their own inventions for strength and efficiency.
One of the highlights was our “Apple Lesson”. The students examined the structure of the fruit under a microscope, then conducted a creative experiment — drawing with invisible ink made from apple juice and revealing their artwork using an iodine solution.
